New Designs in Fabric ~

     Some time ago, I painted a series of images on cotton, sewed them together into a banner & used them at my booth during various events.  People always commented on the banner & wanted to buy a set of the images.  These images are specific to Alaska & the summer festivals / markets.

     BUT, how does one price a set of original paintings? It's a dilemma for many artists. How do you price your work fairly ~ both for the customer & the artist?  I couldn't & don't want to hand paint dozens of these on cotton.

     The solution, or at least something I've contemplated, is to have the images printed on 100% cotton fabric.  I tried setting up my designs as a self-lesson in PhotoShop, uploaded the finished art & today I received my 1 yard & a fat quarter fabric with my paintings.  

     Now to cut them apart & sew into a new banner of peace flags.

Tam Johannes "Glass on Glass"

Cosmos, Tam Johannes, enamel on glass, 12" x 8" $160 In September, multimedia artist Tam Johannes will present an array of her current work using warm glass. Painting on glass is an experimental medium involving painting with enamels that are compatible with glass when fired at high temperatures in a kiln. Each layer of paint is applied, fired on, and then another layer of glass paint is added. Techniques such as sgraffito are also used to imply texture and depth. Three or more high temperature firings in a kiln are often needed.  Tam's work is currently being shown nationally in the Peabody Essex Museum, The Worcester Art Museum, The University of California Berkeley, The National Museum of Women in the Arts Gallery and Christmas Catalog (Washington, D.C.). She has also worked as an Artist in Residence in a number of venues including the Anchorage School District and the Anchorage Museum. It is always fun to see Tam's new endeavors. Her work is accessible and colorful. It is its own niche!

Glass Painting

So, I'm de-stashing supplies in my studio & I came across a whole box of

GlassLine Paints.

I bought them over 10 years ago.  Yikes~!

I only experimented a little & I didn't have a lot of success.

Due to my production schedule I don't have a lot of time to experiment

with new processes so back to the shelf they were sent.

I've been working with float glass recently so I thought I'd pull the

GlassLine Paints back out & experiment a little as I had some room in the kiln.

~  Here's a few examples ~

The Flowers piece above was outlined in black paint & then fired. This is a traditional

glass technique called "tracing."  After the black tracing was fired I applied the colored

glass paint inside the lines.  One thing I learned is that the paint has to be thinned quite

a bit with water.  Thinning helps it to "pool" & "flow" into the space.

I'm working on the reverse side of the glass.

Here's another attempt at the reverse painting.

Tracing in black paint & then filling in with colors.

A little more success with shading & blending some of the paint which is hard

to do when you're working on the reverse side of the glass.

Here's another piece that was created by fusing glass together & then

applying the tracing & masks/matting.  Masking is thin layers

of enamels applied over the glass in layers, allowed to dry, & then

removed with sgraffito technique to reveal the colors below.

It's a long process with multiple firings in the kiln.  GlassLine looks

best to me when it's fired at a full fuse of 1500 degrees.  At this temperature

the float glass also has nice rounded edges & a shinny finish.

Studio Finds

Sometimes cleaning out the studio leads to some interesting finds.

 

Pulling out a box, deep inside a cabinet,  I found a stack of

painted tiles that I made ohhhhh......

probably 10 or more years ago!

 

 

 

 

When my son was little I painted & glazed a number

of tiles & inset them in furniture.

 

Here's the salmon stool that we still use in the bathroom.

Maybe I'll fix up the glazes in a some of these, re-fire, &

inset in furniture.  My son has moved pass "Bugs & Kisses"

but I haven't ~ I miss the baby days ~!

Honey Bee Tiles ~

Being a beekeeper is a passion.

It's a blend of science & art.

 

I'm contemplating a few new venues in 2016 so it's time to work on some new designs.

Often, new designs start with a sketch or a drawing.

Sometimes I paint but lately I've returned to my clay roots. 

Clay is nice because I can work 3 dimensionally & if I'm successful I'll be able to use the clay as a mold or cast it in plaster for future casting.

Wet glaze ~ Pre firing.

 

6X6" tile post firing.  Transparent green glaze.

The transparents are cool as they pool into the textures & add another dimension.
